Brooklyn Bridge, New York

A brilliant example of 19th-century engineering, the Brooklyn Bridge first bridge to use steel for cable wire, and during its construction explosives were used inside a pneumatic caisson for the first time. It is designated as a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. National Park Service. History

Brooklyn Bridge was a masterwork of John Augustus Roebling, the Brooklyn Bridge was started building in 1869 and continues till 1883 in the face of immense difficulties. Augustus Roebling died as a result of an accident at the outset, and then his son, Washington Roebling,  take over as chief engineer for the construction of this Brooklyn Bridge, but a case of the bends sidelined him. Washington Roebling’s wife, Emily, ultimately oversaw the construction, which was completed in 1883. The bridge’s opening day was May 24, 1883, and was marked by much celebration and was attended by Pres. Chester A. Arthur.

The Bridge was built to provide the conveyance for pedestrian traffic between Manhattan and Brooklyn. This resulted in an enormous development of real estate properties and business, particularly on the Brooklyn side, because people could live in Brooklyn and can work in Manhattan.

At the time when the bridge was built, there were no conditions to test the aerodynamics of the bridge (tests of aerodynamics started in the 1950s) but, luckily, there was no need for them. John Augustus Roebling designed the bridge 6 times stronger than it is needed and with that assured that it will last.

Best Way to Discover Brooklyn Bridge

You can have a beautiful spectacular skyline view if you choose to walk from Brooklyn to Manhattan. You could also walk from the Manhattan side halfway across the bridge and then come back. Either way, you can best get to the bridge via the subway.  

It is also very safe to walk across the bridge at night, as there are many tourists and commuters using the bridge until about 11 pm (23:00) at night.

In fact, walking the bridge at night is one of the top free things to do at night in NYC.

It is beautiful at any time of day, but sunset and sunrise are particularly nice. The weather remains cold so be warned to carry your jacket with you whenever you plan to go there.
